ECU remapping and engine remapping. Answers to frequently asked questions
Is remapping just a way to increase performance?
Originally, remapping - especially for turbo-charged vehicles - was seen as a relatively straightforward way to increase performance, sometimes substantially. However, by its nature, the process is based on improving efficiency. It is therefore equally suited to enhancing fuel economy and 'remaps' with the emphasis on economy are now commonplace. Carried out correctly, remapping will not only improve performance, but also economy and general running.
Is a vehicle's reliability affected?
If properly carried out, then no. The settings in the main engine management computer are tuned to enable more efficient operation. In many cases, we can simply provide an upgrade (if available) to install the most up-to-date software from the vehicle's manufacturer. For full remapping, we use software upgrades from Quantum Tuning. Quantum invest massively in software development and all upgrades are inherently designed specifically to have no adverse effect on long-term reliability. We will never consider installing tuning upgrades that exceed sensible levels or compromise reliability.
What exactly is done to my vehicle?
Basically, the engine management computer in your vehicle incorporates a software 'map'. This contains the settings for things such as fuel injection, ignition timing and turbo pressure (if applicable)
that are applied under various conditions. We link to this computer with our equipment and reprogram it, using a revised map specifically developed to optimise the running of your specific vehicle in the case of a full remap, or to install manufacturer software updates if available.
Why don't manufacturers use the optimum settings in the first place?
Primarily, cost. Vehicles are sold across a wide range of markets, where conditions vary, including emissions standards and fuel quality. In addition, many vehicles are deliberately limited in order to fit into relevant tax bands for fleet operators. By using a 'one size fits all' approach,
manufacturing costs are kept down. Using only one map across a range further means manufacturers
reduce the cost of spare-parts stocking requirements incurred by their distributors and dealers.
Will remapping affect the MOT procedure?
Definitely not! In many cases, exhaust emissions are actually reduced by proper remapping because your engine will run more efficiently.
Does engine remapping affect a manufacturer's warranty?
Potentially, yes. Items not directly connected with the procedure should be unaffected. Warranty cover for the engine may be reduced. However, our remapping service comes with its own
warranty.
Should I inform my insurers if I have engine remapping carried out?
Yes. Although the procedure is physically invisible, insurance companies are obviously aware of the practice. In the unfortunate event of an accident, there are potential methods by which an insurance investigator could determine
whether remapping had been performed. In view of the fact that remapping is nowadays likely to be carried out for reasons of improved economy, many insurers do not charge a premium or only increase premiums marginally. We are able to provide
a certificate of conformity if required by your insurance company.
How long does it take and where can you do it?
Engine remapping is carried out onsite at our Milton Keynes workshop, where we have the required hardware and software to install the upgrades and test the systems for correct operation. If no other work is
involved, the procedure normally takes a couple of hours. When you book your vehicle in for the work, we will check that the very latest, up-to-date software is available.
Can you carry out engine remapping for any vehicle?
Remapping is available for the vast majority of modern vehicles fitted with engine management computers. Please contact us with details of your vehicle and we will advise whether it is
suitable for remapping and/or whether manufacturer software updates are available.
Is engine remapping only suitable for turbo-charged vehicles?
Definitely not! Remapping was originally applied almost exclusively to turbo-charged engines, as the emphasis was on performance and the maximum gains could be achieved primarily by increasing the boost pressure. However, engine remapping is now commonly available for most vehicles and significant gains in performance and economy are possible no matter what type of engine is fitted.
What benefits will I gain from having my vehicle remapped?
It very much depends on the specific car or light commercial vehicle. As a general guideline, increases in power and torque of around 10-15% for non-turbo charged petrol engines are common. For
turbo-charged engines, both petrol and diesel, much higher gains are routinely possible. In terms of fuel consumption, some engine types can easily
deliver 10-15% or greater reduction in consumption. Quantum Tuning shares our principles of being honest and never over-stating any figures. If you contact us, we will be able to give you a sensible
estimate of the level of enhancement for your particular vehicle without compromising reliability.
